Summary

Clear cell renal carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, can rarely metastasize to unusual sites like the head and neck. This case highlights an extremely rare infratemporal fossa metastasis from clear cell kidney cancer.

  • Metastases to head and neck regions are uncommon, occurring in approximately 6% of cases.
  • Atypical metastatic sites necessitate thorough diagnostic evaluation.

Observation:

  • A 67-year-old male with a history of Fuhrman grade I ccRCC presented with a left temporo-zygomatic swelling.
  • Biopsy confirmed metastatic ccRCC in the infratemporal fossa.
  • The patient was deemed inoperable and received antiangiogenic therapy.

Findings:

  • This case represents an extremely rare instance of ccRCC metastasis to the infratemporal fossa.
  • The infratemporal fossa is an atypical location for renal cell carcinoma metastasis.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed via biopsy of the metastatic lesion.

Implications:

  • Surgical resection is the preferred treatment for solitary, resectable metastases.
  • Antiangiogenic therapy serves as a viable alternative for unresectable or multiple metastases.
  • Recognition of rare metastatic patterns is crucial for effective patient management.
