Both virtual reality simulators and box trainers effectively improve basic laparoscopic skills for surgical residents. No significant difference was found between the virtual reality simulator (LapSim) and the traditional box trainer in surgical education.
Area of Science:
- Surgical Education
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Medical Simulation
Background:
- Acquiring basic laparoscopic skills is crucial for surgical residents.
- Traditional training methods may not fully prepare novice surgeons for live procedures.
- The effectiveness of virtual reality simulators versus traditional trainers requires investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of a virtual reality simulator (LapSim) and a traditional box trainer for acquiring basic laparoscopic skills.
- To compare the effectiveness of the LapSim with the box trainer in surgical education.
Main Methods:
- First- and second-year surgical residents were randomized to train using either the LapSim or a box trainer for 4 weeks.
- A control group of senior residents received standard clinical surgical education.
- Performance was assessed during laparoscopic bilateral tubal ligation using the Objective Structured Assessment of Laparoscopic Salpingectomy and operation time.
Main Results:
- Both the LapSim and box trainer groups demonstrated significantly improved total scores and reduced operation times compared to the control group.
- No statistically significant differences in performance were observed between the LapSim and box trainer groups.
- Both training modalities proved effective in enhancing laparoscopic skills.
Conclusions:
- Novice residents trained with either a LapSim or box trainer performed significantly better in live laparoscopies than those receiving standard education.
- Virtual reality simulation and box training are valuable tools for surgical skill acquisition.
- Pre-procedural training with simulators or box trainers is recommended before undertaking actual laparoscopic procedures.
