Radiotherapy significantly increases thyroid dysfunction in Hodgkin

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Hodgkin's disease treatment involves polychemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • Late effects on the thyroid gland are a concern in survivors.
  • Thyroid dysfunction and autoimmune thyroiditis prevalence require investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate late effects of neck radiotherapy and polychemotherapy on thyroid function in Hodgkin's disease patients.
  • To assess thyroid dysfunction and antimicrosomal antibody titers in relation to treatment modalities.
  • To evaluate the prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity in young Hodgkin's disease survivors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 51 Hodgkin's disease patients.
  • Categorization into four treatment groups based on chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of basal and post-TRH TSH levels and antimicrosomal antibody titers.
  • Main Results:

    • Higher frequency of thyroid dysfunction (50%) observed in patients receiving radiotherapy compared to those without (27%).
    • Elevated TSH levels and positive antimicrosomal antibody titers were noted across treatment groups.
    • Younger patients (<20 years) showed a higher prevalence of positive antimicrosomal antibodies (30%) compared to the general population (4%).

    Conclusions:

    • Radiotherapy is associated with a higher incidence of thyroid dysfunction in Hodgkin's disease patients.
    • A predisposition to autoimmune thyroid disease may exist in these patients, independent of therapy.
    • Further research is needed to understand the interrelationship between lymphoma, thyroiditis, and treatment modalities.
