Light Acquisition02:16

Light Acquisition

8.0K
In order to produce glucose, plants need to capture sufficient light energy. Many modern plants have evolved leaves specialized for light acquisition. Leaves can be only millimeters in width or tens of meters wide, depending on the environment. Due to competition for sunlight, evolution has driven the evolution of increasingly larger leaves and taller plants, to avoid shading by their neighbors with contaminant elaboration of root architecture and mechanisms to transport water and nutrients.

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy01:16

Confocal Fluorescence Microscopy

16.0K
Confocal microscopy is an advanced microscopic technique. The prime advantage of the confocal microscope over other microscopy techniques is its ability to block the out-of-focus light from the illuminated samples using pinholes. It is widely used with fluorescence optics to obtain high-resolution, sharp contrast images. Unlike optical microscopes, confocal microscopes use a focused beam of light laser to scan the entire sample surface at different z-planes. These microscopes are, therefore,...

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

Lensless ghost imaging (LGI) can now work with unequal arm lengths. This new method successfully forms clear images even when the test and reference arms differ in length, offering practical advantages.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Photonics
    • Quantum Imaging

    Background:

    • Lensless ghost imaging (LGI) traditionally requires equal optical path lengths for test and reference arms.
    • Deviations from equal lengths typically result in image blurring.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and experimentally validate a novel scheme for lensless ghost imaging with unbalanced arm lengths.
    • To demonstrate that clear images can be obtained despite unequal arm lengths in LGI.

    Main Methods:

    • An experimental setup for LGI was designed with intentionally unequal arm lengths.
    • A glass rod was introduced into the longer arm to test image formation.
    • Intensity correlation measurements were performed between the two arms.

    Main Results:

    • A clear image was successfully formed despite the unequal arm lengths.
    • The experimental results were corroborated by theoretical analysis.
    • The presence of an object in the longer arm did not prevent image reconstruction.

    Conclusions:

    • Unbalanced lensless ghost imaging is feasible and effective.
    • This technique offers a potential alternative for practical LGI applications.
    • The findings challenge the strict requirement of equal arm lengths in LGI.
