Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate student perceptions of small group effectiveness within the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum.
  • To utilize the Tutorial Group Effectiveness Instrument for objective assessment.
  • To address the research gap concerning PBL small group dynamics at Xavier University School of Medicine.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving second and third-semester medical students at Xavier University School of Medicine.
  • Informed consent was obtained from all 37 participating students (91.9% response rate).
  • Student perceptions were measured using a 19-statement Likert-type scale assessing cognitive, motivational, and de-motivational aspects of small group effectiveness.

  • The mean cognitive score was 3.76, with mean motivational and de-motivational scores of 3.65 and 2.51, respectively.
  • Median scores indicated generally positive perceptions across cognitive and motivational domains.
