[Relationship between subjective symptom and presumed circle area ratio (PCAR) in benign prostatic hypertrophy]

Subjective symptoms on voiding were analysed in 419 subjects who were submitted to mass screening program for prostatic diseases by means of transrectal sonography, consisting of 296 normal subjects and 123 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Subjective symptoms were encountered in about 70% of normal subjects and 80% of BPH cases. However, almost all normal subjects complained of single symptom, while many BPH cases of multiple symptoms. The frequency of subjective symptoms in BPH cases was significantly higher than that in normal subjects. Relationship between each subjective symptom and the presumed circle area ratio (PCAR) was evaluated in all cases of BPH. As the results, it was proved that the higher the PCAR was, the more the appearance of the urinary prolongation and nocturnal frequency were encountered. Moreover, it was presumed that these symptoms on voiding, especially the urinary prolongation, correlated closely with the degree of urinary obstruction in BPH patients.
