    Summary

    Chorion villus sampling can cause maternal bleeding, but it is usually mild and does not affect pregnancy. Fetal-maternal transfusions are rare and prophylactic anti-D immunoglobulin is recommended for Rh-negative patients.

    Background:

    • Chorion villus sampling (CVS) is a common prenatal diagnostic procedure.
    • Potential complications, including fetal-maternal transfusion and bleeding, require careful assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the incidence and short-term consequences of bleeding following chorion villus sampling.
    • To assess the occurrence and impact of fetal-maternal transfusion after CVS.

    Main Methods:

    • Four separate studies were conducted.
    • Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) levels were monitored.
    • Vaginal bleeding and pregnancy outcomes were recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Fetal-maternal transfusion, indicated by elevated MSAFP, can occur but is inconsistent and transient.
    • Eighty-seven percent of blood in villus samples is maternal.
    • 37% of patients experienced vaginal bleeding, mostly spotting, without impacting pregnancy.
    • Fetal loss occurred in 4 patients with persistent heavy bleeding.

    Conclusions:

    • Vaginal bleeding after CVS is typically mild and does not usually complicate pregnancy.
    • Prophylactic anti-D gamma-globulin is advised for Rh-negative patients due to unreliable detection of fetal-maternal transfusions by Kleihauer counts or MSAFP.
