    Background:

    • Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse-control disorder.
    • PG shares features with substance dependence, including self-regulation deficits and impaired impulsivity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate impulsivity in PG patients using the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, version 11 (BIS-11).
    • To compare impulsivity levels between PG patients and healthy controls.
    • To explore correlations between gambling severity and impulsivity.

    Main Methods:

    • Thirty-five male PG outpatients were compared with a similar group of healthy controls.
    • The Barratt Impulsivity Scale, version 11 (BIS-11) was used to assess impulsivity.
    • Gambling severity was measured using the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS).

    Main Results:

    • PG patients scored significantly higher on the BIS-11 total score, motor impulsivity, cognitive complexity, and non-planning impulsivity compared to controls.
    • Positive correlations were found between SOGS scores and BIS-11 total scores.
    • Correlations were also observed between SOGS and attention/cognitive instability, and attentional/motor impulsivity subscales.

    Conclusions:

    • Impulsivity is a fundamental characteristic of pathological gambling.
    • Higher impulsivity is associated with greater gambling severity.
    • These findings reinforce the view of impulsivity as a core element in the clinical presentation of PG.
