Hyperpigmentation is common in Black patients with Graves

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid.
  • Hyperpigmentation is a potential clinical manifestation in endocrine disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of hyperpigmentation in patients with Graves' disease.
  • To compare the occurrence of hyperpigmentation between Black and non-Black patients.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-two Graves' disease patients were divided into Black (Group I) and non-Black (Group II) cohorts.
  • Patients were observed for the presence of hyperpigmentation.
  • Serum thyroxine levels were measured.

Main Results:

  • Overall hyperpigmentation incidence was 38% in Graves' disease patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 12 of 14 Black patients (Group I) showed hyperpigmentation.
  • 0 of 18 non-Black patients (Group II) showed hyperpigmentation.
  • Higher serum thyroxine levels were observed in Group I compared to Group II.
  • Conclusions:

    • Hyperpigmentation is a frequent finding in Black individuals with Graves' disease.
    • Race is a significant factor in the presentation of hyperpigmentation associated with Graves' disease.
