ER Retrieval Pathway01:45

ER Retrieval Pathway

3.8K
In the secretory pathway, vesicles transport proteins from one cellular compartment to another in forward transport to deliver the protein to its correct location. Occasionally, misfolded proteins and incorrect proteins escape their original compartments, and a retrieval pathway is used to return the escaped proteins to their original compartment.
The ER uses many checkpoints to prevent the entry of incorrectly folded or a resident protein as cargo onto a transport vesicle. These mechanisms...

Methods of Documentation II: POMR

1.4K
The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Informatics
    • Natural Language Processing
    • Medical Terminology

    Background:

    • Mapping medical terms to standardized Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts is crucial for biomedical text analysis.
    • Existing methods struggle with inaccurate or complex query terms common in real-world applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop an efficient and effective approach for mapping medical terms to UMLS concepts.
    • To address the limitations of current tools in handling imperfect query terms.

    Main Methods:

    • Introduction of the Layered Dynamic Programming Mapping (LDPMap) approach.
    • Utilizing indexing and two layers of dynamic programming for efficient term-to-concept mapping.

    Main Results:

    • LDPMap significantly outperforms LCS in query speed.
    • LDPMap demonstrates superior effectiveness compared to UMLS Metathesaurus Browser and MetaMap for handling misspelled, long, or special character-containing medical terms.

    Conclusions:

    • LDPMap provides an efficient and effective solution for mapping medical terms to the UMLS Metathesaurus.
    • The method enhances the usability of biomedical text data.
