Summary

This study determined the maximum angulation for screw-retained multiple prostheses using rotational abutment components. Edge-to-edge implant placement allows for greater angulation (39.54 degrees) than vertex-to-vertex (10.41 degrees).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure the maximum allowable angulation between two implants using rotational abutment components.
  • To provide guidelines for implant positioning in screw-retained multiple prostheses.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty titanium rotational abutments from three brands were tested with external hexagon abutment analogs.
  • Specimens were internally filled, screw-retained, torqued, and sectioned for 3D measurement of internal space.
  • Angulation was assessed between the internal wall of the rotational abutment and the hexagon edges/vertices.

Main Results:

  • Edge-to-edge hexagon orientation yielded maximum angulations of 40.75, 45.00, and 31.89 degrees for the three brands.
  • Vertex-to-vertex hexagon orientation resulted in angulations of 9.79, 18.18, and 3.27 degrees.
  • Overall mean angulations were 39.54 degrees (edge-to-edge) and 10.41 degrees (vertex-to-vertex).

Conclusions:

  • The maximum mean angulation for interference-free screw-retained multiple prostheses is 39.54 degrees with edge-to-edge hexagon orientation.
  • Vertex-to-vertex orientation limits angulation to a mean of 10.41 degrees.
  • Findings offer crucial guidance for optimal external hexagon implant placement in complex prosthetic cases.
