Endothelial microparticles (EMPs) can predict carotid plaque instability. Annexin V-positive microparticles (MPs) may indicate advanced carotid disease in older adults, independent of other markers.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Research
- Biomarker Discovery
- Vascular Biology
Background:
- Cell-derived microparticles (MPs) are vesicles shed from blood cells.
- MPs show potential as biomarkers for vascular diseases.
- Carotid artery disease involves plaque buildup and potential instability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate circulating MPs as predictors of carotid plaque instability.
- To assess MPs' ability to predict the presence of advanced carotid disease.
Main Methods:
- Pilot study comparing carotid endarterectomy patients (n=42) with controls (n=73).
- Plaque stability assessed via immunohistochemistry.
- Blood samples analyzed for MP subsets and molecular biomarkers.
Main Results:
- Endothelial MPs (EMPs) were higher in unstable plaque patients.
- CD31(+)41(-) EMPs predicted plaque instability (OR=2.19).
- Annexin V(+) MPs, platelet MPs, and CRP were higher in cases vs. controls.
Conclusions:
- EMPs may predict plaque instability in carotid patients.
- Annexin V(+) MPs may predict advanced carotid disease in aging populations.
- MP utility is independent of established biomarkers.
