Summary

Wistar rats demonstrated responding by exclusion, a cognitive ability previously unobserved in rodents. This study provides the first experimental evidence of rats selecting correct choices by excluding incorrect ones.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and characteristics of responding by exclusion in Wistar rats.
  • To determine if rats can utilize exclusion as a strategy in a visual discrimination task.
  • To establish the first experimental evidence of exclusion performance in rats.

Main Methods:

  • Six male Wistar rats were trained on a simple simultaneous visual discrimination task using nose-poking in an operant chamber.
  • Stimuli consisted of projected geometric shapes presented on tunnels.
  • Following baseline training, rats underwent three probe sessions, each including a novelty-control probe and an exclusion probe.

Main Results:

  • In novelty probes, only one rat consistently chose the novel stimulus over a previously reinforced stimulus (S(+)).
  • In exclusion probes, four rats successfully chose the novel stimulus, rejecting a previously non-reinforced stimulus (S(-)), across all trials.
  • Five out of six rats demonstrated the ability to perform by exclusion, selecting the novel stimulus by rejecting the S(-).

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first experimental evidence for responding by exclusion in Wistar rats.
  • Rats are capable of using exclusion as a cognitive strategy in a visual discrimination context.
  • Findings contribute to the understanding of comparative cognition and decision-making processes in rodents.
