Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of visual feedback and distracters on omissions and perseverations in left-sided neglect using a touch-screen cancellation task.
  • To compare the performance of patients with left-sided neglect and healthy controls under different task conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen patients with left-sided neglect and 18 controls completed four iPad cancellation tasks: no feedback, visual feedback, visual feedback with distracters, and vanishing targets.
  • Omissions and perseverations were quantified for each condition.

Main Results:

  • Patients with neglect showed significantly more omissions and perseverations than controls, except in the vanishing targets condition.
  • Visual feedback, especially with distracters, increased omissions. Vanishing targets nearly eliminated omissions.
  • Perseverations were highest without feedback, moderately increased with distracters, and nearly abolished with visual feedback (without distracters) and vanishing targets.

Conclusions:

  • Visual feedback and distracters exacerbate hemispatial neglect, supporting the role of impaired disengagement from the ipsilesional side.
  • The improvement in cancellation behavior with vanishing targets suggests potential therapeutic applications for visual neglect.
