Immunologic privilege in the eye and the fetus

Some regions of the body are notably tolerant to transplants of foreign tissues. This 'immunologic privilege' has previously been assigned to the isolation of these sites from the lymphatic system, thus preventing interaction with cells of the immune system. But recent work has largely overturned this theory; antigens can not only reach lymphatic and blood vasculature tissues but can also generate immune responses. Concentrating on the anterior chamber of the eye and the pregnant uterus, Wayne Streilein and Thomas Wegmann suggest that immunologic privilege arises instead from the specific active suppression of a rejection response.

Development of Immunocompetence
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...
Transcytosis of IgG
IgG molecules from a mother undergo transcytosis starting around 13 weeks of gestation. The amount of IgG transferred and entering the fetal blood circulation increases with...

Physiological Barriers
The blood endothelial barrier is the most porous of these. It allows all small ionized, un-ionized, and lipophilic molecules to pass through the endothelial lining into the interstitial space...
