Analgesia and Pain Management01:25

Analgesia and Pain Management

3.3K
Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

10.9K
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Cancer Vaccines

1.4K
Cancer treatment vaccines are a rapidly evolving field that offers a promising approach to immunotherapy. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, cancer treatment vaccines are designed to treat existing cancers by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer vaccines come in two categories: preventive (prophylactic) and treatment (active). Preventive vaccines, such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, protect against viruses that cause certain...

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

6.4K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pain Medicine
  • Palliative Care

Background:

  • Cancer pain affects many patients, leading to undertreatment due to patient, clinician, and system factors.
  • Untreated cancer pain diminishes quality of life, causes functional decline, and increases psychological distress.
  • Early analgesic intervention may prevent central sensitization and chronic pain development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address the prevalent issue of undertreated cancer pain.
  • To discuss various types of cancer pain, including breakthrough pain and analgesic gaps.
  • To review management strategies and guidelines for cancer pain, especially in special populations.

Main Methods:

  • A panel of pain experts convened to discuss cancer pain treatment.
  • Reviewed different types of cancer pain and reasons for undertreatment.
  • Examined consequences of untreated pain and strategies for effective management.
  • Discussed specific guidelines for special populations, including those with substance abuse disorders.

Main Results:

  • Cancer pain is often undertreated due to various barriers.
  • Effective management requires regular assessment, adherence to guidelines, and specialist referral when needed.
  • Opioids are frequently necessary for cancer pain relief.
  • Special populations and those with substance abuse disorders require tailored, supervised pain management.

Conclusions:

  • Cancer pain can be safely and effectively managed.
  • Addressing treatment inertia is key to improving patient outcomes and alleviating suffering.
  • Comprehensive pain management enhances quality of life for cancer patients.
