A 3-month treadmill desk intervention significantly increased daily steps and light physical activity while reducing sedentary time in overweight/obese office workers.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Overweight and obesity are prevalent among office workers.
- Prolonged sedentary behavior in the workplace contributes to health risks.
- Interventions to increase physical activity during work hours are needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of a 3-month shared-treadmill desk intervention.
- To evaluate changes in physical activity and sedentary behavior.
- To target overweight and obese office workers.
Main Methods:
- Randomized controlled trial with 41 overweight/obese office workers.
- Intervention group used shared-treadmill desks; control group maintained usual conditions.
- Physical activity and sedentary behavior measured using accelerometers before and after the intervention.
Main Results:
- The treadmill desk group showed a significant increase in daily steps (1622 steps/day).
- Light physical activity increased (1.6 min/hr) and sedentary time decreased (-3.6 min/hr) during work hours.
- These changes were statistically significant compared to the control group.
Conclusions:
- Shared-treadmill desks are effective for improving physical activity.
- Workplace interventions can promote healthier sedentary behavior.
- Overweight/obese office workers benefit from treadmill desk use.
