Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Background:

  • Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) exhibit enhanced pitch perception and memory but deficits in other auditory domains.
  • Echoic memory, a crucial component of auditory short-term sensory memory, has not been extensively studied from a developmental perspective in ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • This study investigated echoic memory skills in individuals with ASD compared to typically developing (TD) individuals.
  • A developmental approach was employed to understand the maturation of echoic memory in both groups.

Main Methods:

  • 23 high-functioning participants with ASD and 26 TD participants were tested across two age groups (children and young adults).
  • An adaptive psychophysical procedure measured the duration for which periodic noise could be distinguished from nonperiodic noise.
  • Participants classified presented sounds as periodic or nonperiodic.

Main Results:

  • TD adults significantly outperformed children with ASD, children with TD, and adults with ASD.
  • Practice improved echoic memory thresholds in TD participants but not in those with ASD.
  • Response bias variance was greater in participants with ASD compared to TD participants.

Conclusions:

  • Echoic memory development is prolonged in typically developing humans.
  • Development of echoic memory appears to cease prematurely in individuals with ASD.
