Team-based learning (TBL) significantly improved medical student performance on MCQ exams. Students reported positive attitudes and enhanced understanding of course content with TBL integration.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Active Learning Strategies
Background:
- Medical education increasingly uses active learning to boost engagement and higher-order thinking.
- Team-based learning (TBL) is an active strategy fostering collaboration to achieve shared learning goals.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of TBL on student performance in medical education.
- To assess student attitudes towards TBL and its curriculum integration feasibility.
Main Methods:
- 128 students participated in TBL sessions with Individual and Group Readiness Assurance Tests (IRATs/GRATs).
- Sessional MCQ scores of TBL participants were compared to a non-TBL control group.
- Student feedback questionnaires analyzed attitudes and experiences with TBL.
Main Results:
- TBL group demonstrated significantly higher MCQ scores (median 7) than the non-TBL group (median 6).
- Students exhibited a positive overall attitude towards TBL (mean score 3.57).
Conclusions:
- TBL sessions enhance student engagement with medical course material.
- Students believe TBL improves content understanding and future exam performance.
