Summary

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Poor glycemic control in type 2 DM patients was linked to higher OSA severity, though this association requires further investigation.

  • Understanding the prevalence and impact of OSA in diabetes mellitus (DM) is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of OSA in patients with type 1 and type 2 DM.
  • To evaluate how OSA affects glycemic control in these patient populations.

Main Methods:

  • Adult patients with DM were referred for sleep evaluation.
  • Home respiratory polygraphy was used to diagnose OSA.
  • Glycemic control was assessed using glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels.

Main Results:

  • 63% of the 46 studied patients had OSA; 8.7% had severe OSA.
  • OSA prevalence was similar between type 1 and type 2 DM.
  • Type 2 DM patients with poor glycemic control (HbA1c > 7.5%) showed a higher mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), but this was not significant after adjusting for BMI.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of OSA is comparable in type 1 and type 2 DM.
  • A high prevalence of OSA was observed in younger patients with type 1 DM.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between OSA severity and glycemic control in DM.
