Summary

Laser eye surgery, or LASIK, significantly improves both near and distance stereoacuity. While refractive error amount didn't impact vision, anisometropia did affect stereoacuity outcomes.

Background:

  • Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a common refractive surgery for myopia.
  • Assessing the impact of LASIK on visual functions beyond simple acuity is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the changes in near and distance stereoacuity following LASIK for myopic correction.
  • To determine the relationship between refractive error, anisometropia, and stereoacuity outcomes post-LASIK.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective interventional study involving 40 patients (80 eyes) undergoing LASIK.
  • Pre- and post-operative near and distance stereoacuity were measured using Randot tests.
  • Patients achieved unaided vision of 0.67 or better post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in median near stereoacuity (70 to 30 arcsec) and distance stereoacuity (200 to 60 arcsec) was observed (p < 0.001).
  • Anisometropia ≥ 1 diopter was associated with worse distance stereoacuity pre- and post-LASIK.
  • Post-LASIK near and distance stereoacuity showed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.706, p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • LASIK leads to significant enhancements in both near and distance stereoacuity.
  • Stereoacuity outcomes are influenced by anisometropia, not solely by the degree of refractive error corrected.
