This study shows that an integrated approach, combining assets, training, and support, significantly improves the economic status and well-being of the very poor. These positive effects on livelihoods are sustainable and long-lasting, even after the intervention ends.
Area of Science:
- Development Economics
- Poverty Alleviation Strategies
- Social Intervention Research
Background:
- The persistent challenge of extreme poverty requires innovative and effective interventions.
- Integrated approaches combining economic and social support may offer a pathway out of poverty.
- Understanding the long-term impact of such programs is crucial for policy and practice.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the cost-effectiveness and impact of an integrated livelihood improvement program for the very poor.
- To assess the sustainability of economic and psychosocial improvements following the intervention.
- To determine the efficacy of a multi-component intervention across diverse contexts.
Main Methods:
- Six randomized control trials (RCTs) were conducted to assess the program's impact.
- The intervention included productive asset transfer, consumption support, training, coaching, savings encouragement, and health education/services.
- Program implementation was adapted to various geographic and institutional settings with multiple partners.
Main Results:
- Statistically significant and cost-effective improvements in household consumption were observed, primarily driven by increased self-employment income.
- Positive impacts on the psychosocial status of targeted households were documented.
- The beneficial effects on livelihoods persisted for at least one year after the program concluded.
Conclusions:
- Integrated, multi-component interventions can effectively and sustainably improve the economic status of the very poor.
- A relatively short-term intervention can yield lasting positive outcomes for impoverished households.
- The findings support the scalability and adaptability of this integrated approach for poverty reduction.
