Background:

The Triple Aim, proposed in 2008, aims to enhance patient care experience, improve population health outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs.
It addresses the need for both individual and societal changes in healthcare delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the progress and identify key principles for implementing the Triple Aim.
To understand the factors contributing to successful Triple Aim adoption in healthcare organizations and communities.

Main Methods:

Observational research involving 141 diverse healthcare and community organizations globally.
Analysis of contrasting implementation contexts and structures within a collaborative framework.
Development of an ex post theory based on observed successes and challenges.

Main Results:

Identified three core principles for successful Triple Aim implementation: establishing a foundation for population management, scaling services for populations, and creating a learning system.
These principles guided organizations and communities in their pursuit of the Triple Aim goals.

Conclusions:

The Triple Aim is widely adopted, partly due to its integration into the US national healthcare strategy via the Affordable Care Act.
The framework provides a valuable structure for organizations to simultaneously address care experience, population health, and cost reduction.
