Summary

Quinacrine sterilization (QS) offered a nonsurgical permanent contraception method. Despite early concerns about carcinogenicity, extensive studies show no increased cancer risk, suggesting potential for this method.

  • A modified Copper T intrauterine device inserter was developed for precise delivery of quinacrine pellets.

Findings:

  • Quinacrine sterilization (QS) was introduced and utilized in several countries, with a large trial in Vietnam.
  • Concerns regarding quinacrine's potential carcinogenicity led to its discontinuation in 1993.
  • Subsequent epidemiological data from extensive human studies have not supported an increased cancer risk associated with quinacrine.

Implications:

  • Re-evaluation of quinacrine sterilization is warranted given the lack of evidence for increased cancer risk.
  • QS could offer a viable, reversible, or permanent nonsurgical contraception option.
