Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Toxicology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Substance abuse, specifically inhalant abuse, presents significant health risks.
  • Optic neuropathy is a serious condition affecting vision.

Observation:

  • A 17-year-old female presented with acute blindness and subsequent optic atrophy.
  • The patient reported a history of sniffing lacquer thinner for three months.
  • Brain CT scans showed symmetrical low attenuation in the bilateral putamen.

Findings:

  • Gas chromatography analysis identified methyl alcohol and methyl acetate as major components of the thinner.
  • These solvents were determined to be the cause of the optic neuropathy.
  • The case highlights the neurotoxic effects of inhalant abuse.

Implications:

  • Accurate identification of solvents in cases of mixed organic solvent intoxication is crucial.
  • This case underscores the severe visual and neurological consequences of thinner sniffing.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention are vital for managing solvent-induced optic neuropathy.
