Robot-assisted pterygium surgery is feasible using the DaVinci Si HD robotic surgical system. This first human case demonstrates the system

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Robotic Surgery
  • Microsurgery

Background:

  • Pterygium surgery, a common ophthalmic procedure, has limited research regarding robotic applications.
  • Robotic surgical systems offer potential advantages in dexterity and precision for microsurgical tasks.

Observation:

  • Robot-assisted pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft was performed on a 73-year-old patient using the DaVinci Si HD robotic Surgical System.
  • The Kenyon technique was employed for the pterygium removal and graft placement.

Findings:

  • The DaVinci system demonstrated adequate dexterity for all surgical steps.
  • The procedure was completed in 60 minutes and 30 seconds without intraoperative complications or need for conversion to open surgery.
  • Postoperative follow-up revealed no adverse events.
