Continuous versus interrupted sutures for facial surgery repair: a randomized prospective study

Background:

• Facial scar appearance is a significant patient concern after Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS).

Purpose of the Study:

• To compare the cosmetic outcomes of facial MMS scars closed with continuous versus interrupted percutaneous nylon sutures.

Main Methods:

• Patients with facial MMS defects were randomized, with one half of the scar closed using interrupted 5-0 nylon sutures and the other half with running 5-0 nylon sutures.
• Scar appearance was assessed by the principal investigator at 1 week, 8 weeks, and 6 months.
• Blinded photographic evaluations were performed by a plastic surgeon and a general dermatologist at 1 week and 6 months.

• A total of 101 out of 105 patients completed the study assessments.
