Base complementarity between the three base pairs of mRNA codon and the tRNA anticodon is not a failsafe mechanism. Inaccuracies can range from a single mismatch to no correct base pairing at all. The free energy difference between the correct and nearly correct base pairs can be as small as 3 kcal/ mol. With complementarity being the only proofreading step, the estimated error frequency would be one wrong amino acid in every 100 amino acids incorporated. However, error frequencies observed in...

Lesson: Translation
Translation is the process of synthesizing proteins from the genetic information carried by messenger RNA (mRNA). Following transcription, it constitutes the final step in the expression of genes. This process is carried out by ribosomes, complexes of protein and specialized RNA molecules. Ribosomes, transfer RNA (tRNA), and other proteins produce a chain of amino acids—the polypeptide—as the end product of translation.
Translation Produces the Building Blocks of...

Area of Science:

  • Speech-language pathology
  • Developmental pediatrics
  • Cross-cultural psychology

Background:

  • Current speech and language assessments in South Africa lack cultural validity for diverse populations.
  • Standardized tools need adaptation for specific cultural and linguistic groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the appropriateness and utility of the Hindi translation of the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) for 60-month-old children.
  • To assess the tool's cultural and linguistic validity within the South African Indian population.

Main Methods:

  • Translated the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) from English to Hindi.
  • Administered the Hindi ASQ to parents of 15 typically developing South African preschool children of Indian origin (aged 57-66 months).

Main Results:

  • Parents found the Hindi ASQ questions clear and helpful, aided by illustrations and tips.
  • Using Hindi for questioning improved comprehension and ease of providing information.

Conclusions:

  • The Hindi translation of the ASQ (60-month group) is an appropriate tool for middle socioeconomic Hindi-speaking (Indian) families in South Africa.
  • Findings support the development of culturally and linguistically valid assessment tools for early childhood intervention and school-readiness screening in South Africa.
