Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Background:

Psychosocial care is crucial for Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients.
Existing tools for measuring psychosocial care in the ICU are limited.
A validated scale is needed to assess the quality of psychosocial support provided.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the ICU-PC Scale, a new self-report measure for psychosocial care in the ICU.
To examine the psychometric properties of the newly developed scale.
To establish the reliability and validity of the ICU-PC Scale.

Main Methods:

Development of a new self-report scale (ICU-PC Scale).
Initial validation study with a sample of 250 subjects in hospital settings.
Factor analysis to identify the underlying structure of the scale.
Assessment of internal consistency and content validity.

Main Results:

The ICU-PC Scale demonstrated high internal consistency.
A three-factor structure was identified: protection of human dignity and rights, transparency for decision-making, and care continuity and sustained patient/family orientation.
The factors were found to be interrelated with good validity indices.
The scale is the first of its kind to measure psychosocial care specifically for ICU patients.

Conclusions:

The ICU-PC Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring psychosocial care in the ICU.
The identified three-factor structure provides a robust framework for understanding psychosocial support.
Further factor analytic research could establish the ICU-PC Scale as a valuable clinical tool.
