Oleanonic acid from Lantana camara demonstrated potent nematicidal activity against the root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). This natural compound showed efficacy comparable to the synthetic pesticide furadan.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Agricultural Entomology
Background:
- Lantana camara is a plant species known for its diverse phytochemical constituents.
- Root knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) cause significant damage to agricultural crops worldwide.
- There is a continuous need for effective and potentially safer alternatives to synthetic pesticides for nematode control.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and identify triterpenes from Lantana camara.
- To evaluate the nematicidal activity of isolated compounds against Meloidogyne incognita.
- To identify potential natural nematicides for agricultural applications.
Main Methods:
- Bioassay-guided isolation of compounds from the aerial parts of Lantana camara.
- Chemical characterization of isolated triterpenes, including a new compound, lancamarolide.
- Nematicidal activity assays against Meloidogyne incognita at varying concentrations and time points.
Main Results:
- A new triterpene, lancamarolide, and seven known triterpenes were isolated.
- Oleanonic acid exhibited the highest nematicidal activity, causing 80% mortality of Meloidogyne incognita after 72 hours at 0.0625% concentration.
- The activity of oleanonic acid was comparable to the synthetic standard, furadan.
Conclusions:
- Oleanonic acid is a potent natural nematicide with potential for agricultural use.
- Lantana camara serves as a valuable source of bioactive compounds for pest management.
- Further research into the mechanism of action and field application of oleanonic acid is warranted.
