Researchers identified two novel γ-pyrone glucosides in Paeonia albiflora roots. These compounds, along with known ones, were tested for their ability to inhibit tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) release.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Paeonia albiflora, a traditional medicinal herb, contains various bioactive compounds.
- γ-pyrone glucosides are a class of natural products with potential biological activities.
- Previous phytochemical investigations of P. albiflora have not reported the presence of γ-pyrone glucosides.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new compounds from the roots of Paeonia albiflora.
- To elucidate the chemical structures of the isolated compounds.
- To evaluate the inhibitory activity of the isolated compounds on tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) release in vitro.
Main Methods:
- Phytochemical investigation involving extraction and isolation techniques.
- Structure elucidation using spectral data (NMR, MS) and chemical analysis.
- In vitro bioassay to assess TNF-α release inhibition.
Main Results:
- Two new γ-pyrone glucosides, 2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-yl-6-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (1) and 2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-yl-6-O-galloyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), were isolated.
- Three known compounds were also identified.
- Compounds 1-5 were evaluated for their inhibitory activity on TNF-α release, with results indicating potential anti-inflammatory properties.
Conclusions:
- This study reports for the first time the presence of γ-pyrone glucosides in Paeonia albiflora.
- The isolated compounds represent novel chemical entities from this plant source.
- The findings suggest that P. albiflora may possess anti-inflammatory potential mediated by these γ-pyrone glucosides.

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Prostacyclin Receptor Agonists
These agonists bind to the IPR receptor situated on the plasma membrane of the pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. This binding triggers a cascade of reactions known as the GS-AC-cAMP-PKA pathway. This pathway results in the relaxation of smooth muscle...
