A sebaceous gland is a type of oil gland found almost all over the skin ( except palms and soles) and helps lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair. Most sebaceous glands are associated with hair follicles. They generate and excrete sebum, a mixture of lipids, onto the skin surface, thereby naturally lubricating the dry and dead layer of keratinized cells of the stratum corneum, keeping it pliable.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize adipokines in human sebaceous glands and sebocyte cell lines.
  • To investigate the role of sebocytes in skin inflammatory processes through adipokine expression.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of adipokine expression in healthy and diseased skin samples (acne, rosacea, melanoma, psoriasis).
  • Characterization of adipokine expression and secretion in SZ95 sebaceous gland cell line under various stimuli (TLR agonists, 13-cis retinoic acid).

Main Results:

  • Sebaceous glands consistently expressed adiponectin, IL6, resistin, leptin, serpin E1, and visfatin.
  • Apelin, chemerin, RBP4, and MCP1 were not detected in sebaceous glands.
  • Expression of most detected adipokines correlated with secreted protein levels and could be regulated at the gene expression level.

Conclusions:

  • Sebocytes express and secrete adipokines, supporting their similarity to adipocytes.
  • Sebocytes may initiate and modulate skin inflammatory responses through adipokine expression and secretion.
