Background:

Open Bankart repair is a common procedure for shoulder instability.
Limited data exist on the return-to-play (RTP) timeline for athletes post-surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the literature on RTP timelines after open Bankart repair in athletes.
To identify objective criteria used for RTP decisions.

Main Methods:

Systematic review of English-language articles (1947-2012) on open Bankart repair in athletes.
Inclusion criteria: open Bankart repair, minimum 8-month follow-up, athlete population, RTP data.
Data extracted: patient demographics, follow-up duration, outcome scores, redislocation rates, RTP timing.

Main Results:

29 articles met inclusion criteria, with a mean follow-up of 51.7 months.
Average redislocation rate was 5.3%.
26 studies reported a mean RTP of 23.2 weeks; only 38% specified sport-specific criteria.

Conclusions:

A general RTP guideline of 23.2 weeks is suggested based on current literature.
More research is needed on sport-specific criteria and functional parameters for RTP after open Bankart repair.
