Background:

  • Impaired lung function and insulin resistance are predictors of cardiovascular mortality.
  • Their co-existence, along with other risk factors, may cumulatively increase cardiovascular mortality, even in individuals without diagnosed respiratory disease.
  • Assessing lung function in patients with insulin resistance could inform strategies to mitigate cardiovascular risk by preserving lung function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between insulin resistance and lung function in adult outpatients in Turkey.
  • To determine if insulin resistance detrimentally impacts lung function in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study included 171 non-smoking adult outpatients from internal medicine clinics.
  • Patients were categorized based on the presence (n=63) or absence (n=108) of insulin resistance.
  • Data collected included anthropometrics, blood pressure, biochemistry, metabolic syndrome status, and lung function tests. Logistic regression analysis identified correlates of insulin resistance.

Main Results:

  • Insulin resistance was identified in 36.8% of the study participants.
  • Logistic regression showed increased odds of insulin resistance with higher waist circumference and triglyceride levels, and lower HDL cholesterol.
  • A decrease in predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC%pre) was also associated with a higher likelihood of insulin resistance.

Conclusions:

  • Insulin resistance is a significant contributing factor to the decline in lung function.
  • These findings highlight the importance of considering insulin resistance when evaluating lung function and cardiovascular risk.
