    Summary

    This study found a potential link between specific Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) markers and calcific periarthritis (hydroxyapatite rheumatism). Increased prevalence of HLA A2 and HLA BW35 was observed in patients, suggesting a possible genetic susceptibility factor.

    Background:

    • Calcific periarthritis, also known as hydroxyapatite rheumatism, is a condition characterized by the deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals.
    • The genetic factors influencing susceptibility to this condition are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the potential association between Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) markers and calcific periarthritis.
    • To explore if specific HLA alleles are more prevalent in patients with hydroxyapatite rheumatism compared to healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing was performed on 38 patients diagnosed with calcific periarthritis.
    • The prevalence of specific HLA alleles in patients was compared to that of 591 healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant increased prevalence of HLA A2 (66% in patients vs. 44% in controls, p<0.01) and HLA BW35 (34% in patients vs. 19% in controls, p<0.03) was observed in patients with calcific periarthritis.
    • These findings suggest a possible association between these HLA markers and the disease.

    Conclusions:

    • Preliminary results indicate a potential association between HLA A2 and HLA BW35 and susceptibility to calcific periarthritis.
    • Further research with larger patient cohorts and family studies is warranted to confirm these genetic associations and elucidate their role in disease pathogenesis.
