Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Background:

The Basic Personality Inventory (BPI) is a widely used psychological assessment tool.
Evaluating the empirical item structure is crucial for validating assessment instruments.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the empirical item structure of the Basic Personality Inventory.
To confirm the congruence between the hypothesized and empirical structure of the BPI.

Main Methods:

Principal components analysis with confirmatory rotation was applied.
Three distinct samples were analyzed: normal adults, psychiatric patients, and high school students.

Main Results:

High percentages of items (96-99%) loaded appropriately on their respective scales across samples.
The empirical item structure strongly aligned with the hypothesized structure, with keyed items showing higher loadings.
The BPI demonstrated significant improvement over chance, indicating construct validity.

Conclusions:

The study provides strong evidence for the empirical item structure and construct validity of the Basic Personality Inventory.
The findings support the efficiency of the construct-oriented heuristic in personality assessment development.
