This study assessed hospital efficiency in Tehran using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Results show potential for improving technical efficiency and achieving economies of scale through better resource allocation.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Management
- Health Economics
- Operations Research
Background:
- Assessing hospital performance is crucial for achieving organizational goals.
- Measuring hospital efficiency enhances resource productivity in healthcare.
- This study focused on technical efficiency and resource allocation in Tehran university hospitals.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure the technical efficiency of selected university hospitals.
- To determine the status of resource allocation within these hospitals.
- To identify areas for improving healthcare resource management.
Main Methods:
- Employed data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA).
- Utilized Deap2.1 and Frontier 4.1 software for analysis.
- Collected data on human resources, capital, and hospital outputs.
Main Results:
- DEA indicated average technical, management, and scale efficiencies of 0.87, 0.971, and 0.907.
- SFA estimated technical efficiency at 0.389.
- Efficiency levels fluctuated and did not follow a fixed trend over time.
Conclusions:
- Identified hospitals with varying levels of efficiency, providing benchmarks.
- Highlighted the potential to enhance technical efficiency by optimizing input usage.
- Emphasized the significant economies of scale achievable through optimal resource allocation.
