Maternal insecure attachment is linked to depression in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This finding highlights the importance of considering maternal attachment in ADHD assessments and treatments.
Area of Science:
- Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
- Developmental Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently presents with comorbid conditions.
- Maternal psychological factors, such as attachment style, may influence the presentation and course of childhood ADHD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between maternal attachment style and the presence of comorbid disorders in children diagnosed with ADHD.
- To explore potential links between specific maternal attachment patterns and comorbid conditions in pediatric ADHD.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 103 children with ADHD and their mothers were assessed.
- Comorbidity in children was evaluated using the MINI-KID interview.
- Maternal attachment styles were assessed using the Adult Attachment Questionnaire.
Main Results:
- A significant association was identified between maternal insecure attachment and the presence of depressive disorder in children with ADHD.
- Child and parental variables were considered, but maternal attachment style emerged as a key factor for comorbid depression.
Conclusions:
- Maternal insecure attachment is a relevant factor to consider in childhood ADHD, particularly when depression is present.
- Clinical assessment and treatment strategies for childhood ADHD with comorbid depression should incorporate evaluation of maternal attachment patterns.
