Summary

Transsynaptic retrograde degeneration causes retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning after retrogeniculate lesions. Ganglion cell layer (RGCL) thinning, not RNFL, predicts visual field defects, confirming degeneration in these pathways.

Background:

  • Transsynaptic retrograde degeneration (TRD) causes retinal thinning post-retrogeniculate lesions, a long-debated phenomenon.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) enables in vivo retinal thickness measurement, facilitating TRD research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and retinal ganglion cell layer (RGCL) thickness in patients with retrogeniculate lesions.
  • To determine if TRD affects RNFL and RGCL, and correlate findings with visual field defects.

  • Retrospective study of nine patients with confirmed isolated retrogeniculate lesions.

  • RGCL thickness is a more reliable predictor of visual field defects than RNFL in TRD.
