Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Oral Rehabilitation
  • Biomaterials Engineering

Background:

  • Mandibular complete dentures often suffer from instability, significantly impairing masticatory function and patient quality of life.
  • Conventional treatment options may not be suitable for all edentulous patients requiring denture stabilization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of symphyseal mini implants on masticatory parameters.
  • To assess the effect of mini implants on the quality of life in patients with unstable mandibular dentures.

Main Methods:

  • Eleven edentulous subjects underwent placement of four symphyseal mini implants.
  • Masticatory parameters (kinematics, bolus particle size) and quality of life (Global Oral Health Assessment Index) were assessed before and after implant placement.

Main Results:

  • Improved ability to chew carrots was observed in more subjects post-procedure (8 vs. 4).
  • Significant improvements in chewing kinematics and quality of life were noted.
  • While improved, bolus particle size remained higher than in dentate individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Symphyseal mini implants effectively enhance masticatory function and patient-reported quality of life.
  • This procedure represents a promising alternative for stabilizing mandibular dentures, particularly for patients ineligible for conventional implants.
