Summary

Adult cochlear implant users often don't know about or use listening aids for phone calls, despite these devices significantly improving speech understanding. The Roger system offered the most benefit.

Background:

  • Adult cochlear implant (CI) users face challenges with cell-phone communication.
  • Awareness and utilization of assistive listening devices (ALDs) among this population are not well-understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate phone usage patterns and ALD awareness in adult CI recipients.
  • To determine the objective and subjective benefits of ALDs for cell-phone communication.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire assessed phone habits and ALD awareness in 17 adult CI users.
  • Speech perception was tested with and without ALDs using recorded word lists on an iPhone 5C.
  • Subjective benefit was evaluated based on the ALD system used.

Main Results:

  • 65% of CI users regularly used phones, but 71% never used ALDs.
  • Speech discrimination scores improved with ALDs in quiet and noisy conditions.
  • The Roger system provided the greatest benefit, followed by FM and inductive systems.

Conclusions:

  • Assistive listening devices are effective for improving cell-phone communication in adult CI users.
  • There is a significant lack of awareness and utilization of these beneficial devices among CI recipients.
