Insights
This study details the surgical treatment of pediatric infragenual hygromas, noting an 8.8% recurrence rate. It investigates causes of recurrence and proposes an improved surgical approach for these benign cystic masses.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Orthopedics
- Surgical Oncology
Context:
- Infragenual hygromas are benign cystic masses affecting children.
- The etiology of hygromas remains unclear, with potential links to trauma and inflammation.
Purpose:
- To present the diagnostic and treatment experience with 267 pediatric infragenual hygromas.
- To investigate the causes of hygroma recurrence after surgical intervention.
- To propose an optimized surgical technique for recurrent hygromas.
Summary:
- Surgical excision is the primary treatment for infragenual hygromas.
- Recurrence rates were observed at 8.8% in the studied cohort.
- Analysis of recurrence factors informed the development of a novel surgical strategy.
Impact:
- Provides insights into the management of pediatric hygromas.
- Offers a potential solution to reduce recurrence rates.
- Contributes to the understanding of hygroma pathogenesis and surgical outcomes.
Abstract:
The authors describe their experience in diagnosis and treatment of 267 children with hygroma of the infragenual region. The nature of the disease is still not clear with various factors such as injuries and inflammatory diseases affecting its development. Hygromas are treated surgically, recurrences occur in 8.8% of the cases. The causes of the recurrences are investigated and an operation in recurrent hygromas is proposed.
