The Availability Heuristic

7.2K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Nutrition
  • Hematology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Disease-related malnutrition (DRM) impacts 25% of hospitalized patients in Spain, rising to 36.8% in hematology wards.
  • Approximately 20% of cancer patients die from complications linked to DRM.
  • A pilot study in the Hematology Department of CAULE revealed high malnutrition prevalence, increasing during hospitalization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the process of implementing nutritional screening and intervention in a hematology department.
  • To improve the nutritional status of hospitalized patients with hematological malignancies.
  • To address the identified gap in nutritional support and its association with poor prognosis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic nutritional screening implementation starting in 2011.
  • Nutritional intervention tailored to patient needs, focusing on caloric and protein intake.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the nutritional status and outcomes of patients.

Main Results:

  • High initial prevalence of malnutrition, with a tendency to increase during hospital stay.
  • Inadequate nutritional support observed, with only 8.3% receiving any support.
  • Caloric and protein needs were unmet, correlating with a worse prognosis.

Conclusions:

  • Systematic nutritional screening and intervention are crucial for hospitalized hematology patients.
  • Improved nutritional status is associated with better patient prognosis.
  • The implemented program received recognition as a Good Practice by the National Health System.
