Summary

This study found excellent soft tissue stability around single dental implants replacing maxillary lateral incisors. Innovative 3D imaging showed minimal changes over two years in both immediate and conventional implant placement groups.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Oral Surgery

Background:

  • Maxillary lateral incisor replacement with dental implants requires stable soft tissue support.
  • Assessing peri-implant soft tissue changes over time is crucial for long-term implant success.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate soft tissue stability around single dental implants used for maxillary lateral incisor replacement.
  • To compare soft tissue changes between immediate implant placement and conventional placement in healed ridges.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized reverse-engineering software for superimposing 3D surface models of dentogingival structures.
  • Intraoral scans were taken at final crown delivery (S1) and 2 years later (S2).
  • Euclidean surface distances and color maps quantified soft tissue changes between S1 and S2.

Main Results:

  • Twenty patients (10 test, 10 control) received immediately loaded implants.
  • Mean soft tissue reduction was 0.057 mm (±0.025) in the test group and 0.037 mm (±0.020) in the control group.
  • The difference in soft tissue changes between groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.069).

Conclusions:

  • Excellent peri-implant soft tissue stability was observed in both immediate and conventional implant placement groups.
  • Minimal soft tissue changes were recorded over the 2-year follow-up period.
  • The 3D superimposition method effectively demonstrated long-term soft tissue stability around dental implants.
