Summary

A new food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) demonstrates good reproducibility and validity for assessing nutrient intake in Korean adults. This dietary assessment tool is suitable for the Trace Element Study of Korean Adults in the Yeungnam area (SELEN) cohort.

Background:

  • Accurate dietary assessment is crucial for epidemiological studies.
  • A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is needed for the Trace Element Study of Korean Adults in the Yeungnam area (SELEN) cohort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reproducibility and validity of a newly developed semi-quantitative FFQ for Korean adults in the Yeungnam region.
  • To assess the FFQ's suitability for the SELEN cohort study.

Main Methods:

  • A semi-quantitative FFQ with 146 items was administered twice to 65 adults (17 men, 48 women) over 3 months.
  • Dietary records (DR) were used as a reference method for validity testing.
  • Reproducibility and validity were assessed using correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman method, and cross-classification.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in mean nutrient intake were observed between FFQ administrations and DR.
  • Median correlation coefficients were 0.47 for reproducibility and 0.56 for validity.
  • Cross-classification showed that 78% of subjects were in the same or adjacent quartiles for most nutrients, indicating acceptable agreement.

Conclusions:

  • The newly developed FFQ is a reproducible and valid dietary assessment tool.
  • The FFQ is suitable for use in the SELEN cohort study for evaluating nutrient intake in Korean adults.
