Abstract:
The Israel Residential Center for Alcoholics is the only 1 of its kind in Israel. Since its establishment in 1982 hundreds have been treated in residence for periods of 2 months and more. 187 alcoholics, or 40.9% of the hospitalized clients, have abstained from drinking for 1-5 years. Of those who have completed therapy, 51.2% continue to abstain from drinking. 73.4% of those who abstain do regular work, while the others are accommodated in various work settings or are undergoing rehabilitation. 97% of the clients are men, 95% are Jews and 67% are married with families. A large proportion applied for hospitalization between the ages 31-50, after many years of drinking. More than 20% were born in Israel while 8% are second-generation Israelis. More than 40% completed high-school and 6% of them have had higher education.
