Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

5.4K
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...

Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

4.2K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

697
Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

604
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

862
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...

Summary

A behavioral intervention helped reduce excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) in normal weight and class 1 obese pregnant women. However, it did not significantly lower the overall proportion of women exceeding recommended GWG guidelines.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal Health
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) poses risks to maternal and child health.
  • Identifying effective interventions to manage GWG is crucial for improving pregnancy outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a behavioral intervention aimed at preventing excessive GWG.
  • To compare GWG in women receiving the intervention versus usual care.

Main Methods:

  • The longitudinal Glowing study involved 230 pregnant women attending six intervention sessions.
  • Participants were compared to a matched cohort from the Arkansas Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring Survey (PRAMS).

Main Results:

  • The intervention was well-accepted, with 98% attendance.
  • Normal weight and class 1 obese participants in the intervention group had significantly lower mean GWG compared to controls.
  • No significant difference was found in the overall proportion of women exceeding GWG guidelines between groups.

Conclusions:

  • The behavioral intervention effectively attenuated GWG in normal weight and class 1 obese women.
  • A more intensive approach may be needed to ensure all women achieve GWG within recommended guidelines.
