    Summary

This study found lower hypnotic susceptibility in phobic individuals than expected, contradicting prior research. Hypnosis may contribute to phobic symptoms, but other factors are also crucial.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Hypnotherapy Research

    Background:

    • Previous research suggested a link between hypnotic susceptibility and phobic disorders.
    • Hypnosis was theorized to play a role in the development or maintenance of phobias.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate hypnotic susceptibility in a sample of individuals with phobic disorders.
    • To compare findings with previous studies and theoretical predictions.

    Main Methods:

    • Twenty-five individuals with phobic disorders were administered the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C).
    • Scores were analyzed and compared to existing literature and theoretical expectations.

    Main Results:

    • The mean SHSS:C score for the phobic sample was 3.5 (S.D. = 2.6).
    • This average score was significantly lower than scores reported in comparison groups and contrary to prior predictions.
    • Potential reasons for the discrepancy, such as sample differences, were explored.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings challenge previous assumptions about hypnotic susceptibility in phobic populations.
    • While hypnosis might be implicated in some cases of phobic symptom development, it is not the sole explanatory factor.
    • Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay of factors contributing to phobias.
