Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

4.6K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

The physical assessment examines the patient for objective data that defines the patient's condition, and aids in formulating the nursing care plan. The purpose of physical assessment is a health status appraisal, which includes identifying health problems, and establishing a database for nursing intervention.
The principles to begin the physical assessment include conducting a comprehensive or problem-related history in a quiet, well-lit room, emphasizing privacy and comfort for the...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.6K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Nursing Education
  • Clinical Skills Assessment

Background:

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are crucial for evaluating clinical skills.
  • Traditional OSCEs may have limitations in assessing the full spectrum of nursing competencies.
  • A modified, problem-focused OSCE model was developed to enhance assessment accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop, implement, and evaluate an innovative modified OSCE model.
  • To compare nursing students' performance in clinical skills as assessed by standardized patients versus OSCE examiners.
  • To determine the effectiveness of the modified OSCE in assessing clinical competencies and critical thinking.

Main Methods:

  • A modified, problem-focused OSCE model was implemented for final-year undergraduate nursing students.
  • Seventy-seven students completed assessments across four stations (nine substations).
  • Data were collected by comparing scores from standardized patients and OSCE examiners for various clinical skills.

Main Results:

  • Standardized patients consistently scored students higher than examiners in history taking, emergency response, medical orders, technical operation, nursing evaluation, and health education (p < .01).
  • No significant difference was found between standardized patient and examiner scores for physical examination skills (p > .05).
  • The modified OSCE model effectively assessed nursing students' clinical competencies, clinical, and critical thinking.

Conclusions:

  • The modified, problem-focused, and nursing process-driven OSCE model is an effective tool for assessing nursing students' clinical competencies.
  • Standardized patients provide a valuable and often higher assessment of specific clinical skills compared to traditional OSCE examiners.
  • This innovative OSCE approach enhances the evaluation of critical thinking and practical skills in nursing education.
