Summary

Laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair using Polysoft™ mesh is safe and effective. This study found no mesh-related complications or chronic pain, suggesting feasibility for TAPP procedures.

Background:

  • Inguinal hernias are common surgical conditions.
  • Laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair is an established technique.
  • Novel mesh materials are continually evaluated for improved outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of TAPP inguinal hernia repair using the Polysoft™ memory-ring mesh.
  • To evaluate short-term outcomes, including recurrence rates and chronic pain incidence.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 67 adult patients undergoing 76 TAPP inguinal hernia repairs with Polysoft™ mesh.
  • Repairs were performed by senior residents under specialist supervision.
  • Included various hernia types: direct, indirect, femoral, pantaloon, and recurrent.

Main Results:

  • No conversions to open repair were necessary.
  • Mean operative time for unilateral repair was 109 minutes.
  • Five patients developed scrotal seroma; no cases of orchitis, testicle edema, trocar site infection, or chronic pain were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Polysoft™ mesh is a feasible and safe option for TAPP inguinal hernia repair.
  • The use of this mesh did not compromise repair quality.
  • Potential for reduced postoperative pain is suggested.
